Slack is a team collaboration tool co-founded by Stewart Butterfield, Eric Costello, Cal Henderson, and Serguei Mourachov. Slack began as an internal tool used by their company, Tiny Speck, in the development of Glitch, a now defunct online game. Slack was launched in August 2013, and signed up 8,000 customers within 24 hours of launch.
Gaining a very credable 9th place in the competition, Slack’s success is a result of their innovative user experience. This allows companies not only to create an efficient communication process but to also continue to work with all their regular tools so they can simply synchronize the data. This is opposed to changing their entire work structure altogether.
Slack offers persistent chat rooms organised by topic, as well as private groups and direct messaging. All content inside Slack is searchable, including files, conversations, and people. Slack integrates with a large number of third-party services and supports community-built integrations. Major integrations include services such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Heroku, Crashlytics, GitHub, Runscope and Zendesk.
Its main aim is to reduce email communications between teams so people don’t have to sift through large email threads. In doing so, the tool allows for group conversations, file sharing, contextual search and encrypts data to ensure security.
Conversations are possible in either private one-on-one interactions or in open channels across the team. Users can also drop files, documents, PDFs, images and videos to share with anyone and get immediate feedback and discussion through channels. This is coupled with the ability to search across archives to sort and find files by recency, relevancy, person and more. With over 80 app integrations, users can use these interactions to set up and post notifications within slack.
Slack is already used by some of the world’s biggest companies including: Airbnb, BuzzFeed, Dow Jones, eBay, NBCUniversal, salesforce and more.
